Just a few, short months ago, this was my office. Grey-blue walls, big desk, lots of computer monitors and musical gear. It was my office and refuge all through the freelance year and the years afterwords.
When we decided to have a child (if you’re curious about that decision, you can read about it over on my personal blog), we of course had to decide how we were going to make that work in our house. Kid’s gotta have a room, right? We have three bedrooms in our house so you wouldn’t think this would be hard at first glance – one couple, three bedrooms, no problem, right? Well…
One bedroom is the master, so that’s in use (one bedroom down). And, as you probably know, Jess is self employed and, as such, works out of the house so she’s gotta have an office (that’s two bedrooms being used). Even thought it doubled as a guest room, I ALSO have an office on account of the freelance work and the musical stuff (that’s all three bedrooms accounted for).
My first thought was, “oh well, there goes my office” since Jess needs to keep working out of hers but she made a very good point – my guitars and whatnot probably need to be behind a door and away from grabby little hands until those hands are capable of being somewhat gentle. So we played a great big game of musical rooms on our top floor. Jess’s office has become a combo office with my desk, computers, musical gear as well has her crafting table and sewing machine in it. Her desk has moved out to the large, open bonus room. This was her idea and honestly a stroke of brilliance in my opinion. This way (once I put up the baby gate at the top of the stairs) the baby will be able to play and hang out in nearly the whole upstairs and not be out of eyesight/earshot of Jess while she’s working. Pretty smart.
That of course leaves the room that was my office. That room has been pretty dramatically transformed from the image above. Now it looks like this:
Gone are the blues and greys. They’ve been replaced with purple and pink. Gone is the big desk, computers, and collection of strange nick-nacks. A crib, rocker, changing table, and tree decals have taken their places.
I gotta tell you, I honestly and truly love this room now. I love it in a way that I didn’t love my office… and I loved my office.
As I started to get used to the idea of transforming my office into a nursery, I began to look at things for kid’s rooms. That’s when I came across the firefly lamp. I saw it and, for some reason, I REALLY wanted it for the nursery (you can see it in the gallery below). That sparked the idea of not only the tree decals but the bedding set as well. Bugs, trees, and flowers became the theme. It may have taken two weekends to get the painting done and a whole day to get the tree decals up but I’m realy happy with the results. I walk into that room and it just… makes me happy. Even with all the pink! I’m learning how to embrace the pink…
Part of me knows that it’s silly to put this much work into a room for a baby who really can’t appreciate it… but the better part of me knows that, though she won’t appreciate it, WE will and that’s just as important. We’re most likely going to be spending a HUGE amount of time in this room over the next few years and it’s important that it be comfortable for us. And it is.
So, another thing that I’m doing to prepare for Ellie is learning some video editing software. Our world has become so visual that I feel like photo and video documentation is going to be pretty important to her down the road. Jess and I have photos covered (this poor kid is going to have so many photos of her) but neither of us have done a whole lot of video work. So, because I can’t just do something casual and feel the need to make something as simple as videos of a baby into something artistic, I’m learning how to do some more serious video editing.
This is my first attempt at real video editing since college so be kind…
Anyway, between that video and the gallery below, I think you get the idea. We made a nursery and I think it’s awesome.
I’m looking forward to meeting our little girl. It shouldn’t be much longer now. Stay tuned for more pictures, videos, and blogs. We’re about as prepared as we can be but we’d love your prayers as we start this crazy adventure.
